Distracted driving is one of the major causes of auto accident. We hope that every one knows that the new California hands free driving laws has taken effect on July 1st, 2008. The new laws prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. Drivers 18 and over may use a “hand-free device”, and drivers under the age of 18 absolutely can not use any wireless telephone even with a “hands-free” device; yes, not even the speaker phone.
According to this new law, the only exception is that drivers are allowed to use a cell phone to make emergency calls to a law enforcement agency, a medical provider, the fire department, or other emergency services agency.
So use a hand-free device, or for young people not over 18, turn off your cell while heading to your car. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
