Since March 2009, about $375 million in stimulus has been used to increase government guarantees on 7(a) loans to 90% and eliminate borrower fees on both 7(a) and 504 loans. Both houses are discussing extending that funding. The SBA says stimulus money has so far supported about 36,000 loans, totaling $14 billion. Before those funds were available, 7(a) lending had dropped about 50%. Based on current loan volume, SBA spokesman Jonathan Swain estimates it would take about $50 million to $55 million more per month to continue the initiatives.

Business Week, Dec 14, 2009 p62

When respondents were asked about their pipeline for new business for the balance of 2009, 41 percent responded that they expect a sales increase, 35 percent predict it will stay the same, while only 15 percent anticipate decreasing sales and 9 percent weighed in as unsure.

I’m researching new businesses and would like to find out more about successful startups with original concepts. I want to know how much they cost to start, how many people they employ, how much profit they make, how long they’ve been operating, and other statistics. Can you tell me where to find this information? — A.A., Tokyo The information you want won’t be available at your fingertips, but if you’re willing to do some research you can find a good deal of it online. Because startups are private companies, and many of them don’t survive long enough to grow, getting accurate data on them is tricky. That’s particularly true when you’re talking about profitability, a statistic that many entrepreneurs are reluctant to disclose. “There is no one-size-fits-all answer” to your question,” says Thom Ruhe, director of entrepreneurship at the nonprofit Kauffman Foundation. “As for cost to start, that varies dramatically by the type of business being started. Online businesses, for example, require very little capital to start, owing to the many affordable tools that make creating and hosting a Web site a relatively easy thing to do. By comparison, a manufacturing startup could require hundreds of thousands of dollars to get off the ground.

When it comes to building a business you need folks that will do whatever it takes to make the customers happy. The Mrs. Field “purpose” in business is simple: “To build the best cookie in the world and d our customers smile.” If we did those two things without compromise, we would succeed.

“Welcome to the World of Dormia. Ordinary sleepwalkers wake up in the living room or in the kitchen eating ice cream. But twelve-year-old Alfonso Perplexon tends to wake up tightrope-walking along a set of power lines or clinging to the top of a massive, wind-blown pine tree. No one in his hometown of World’s End, Minnesota has seen anything like it, until one wintry evening an old man arrives at Alfonso’s doorstep with an astounding explanation.” [J HALPERN]

“Simon Basher is back with another zany primer to science! Following his 3 successful titles on the basics of chemistry, physics, and biology, ROCKS AND MINERALS is an in-depth look at the ground beneath our feet. Like his other titles, Basher presents these topics through charming and adorable illustrations and pairs them with basic information told from a first person perspective. He develops a community of characters based on the things that form the foundations of our planet: rocks, gems, crystals, fossils and more. And what’s more, he makes it understandable, interesting, and cute. It’s not what you expect out of a science primer.” [J552 GREEN]

Clever ideas for holiday crafts are always welcome at this time of year. Gingerbread houses are now made for competitions, with all sorts of edible goodies being fair game as construction materials. Gunter’s houses and other buildings, including an igloo, all have a baked gingerbread base with step-by-step instructions for adding candy, icing, pretzels, etc. Enlargeable templates for baked pieces are included.Continuing the Christmas feeling, 300 Ways is a collection of crafts, songs, and recipes from nine of Sterling’s previous titles, including Christmas Naturals and A Crafter’s Book of Santas. The contents are similar to Natasha Tabori Fried and Lena Tabori’s The Christmas Almanac and include wreaths and more gingerbread buildings. Both books are good for Christmas crafts collections needing new material. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

“Amanda is scared of the dark. But her dad can fix that. He shows Amanda all the wonderful things that live in the dark, like fireflies, crickets, and stars. And when her father has to go away, he even puts glowing paper stars on Amanda’s bedroom ceiling, so she can look at their special star while he’s away and know he’s on the other side of the world looking at it too, and thinking of her.” [JPB NORMAN]

“If you had a magic wall that could take you to any place and any time, where would you go? Would you want to visit castles and desert islands? Would you want to meet famous wizards, terrible pirates, beautiful queens, and dastardly outlaws? If so, then you are just like Henry and Emma, and Roy and Susan — and you will probably like this story a lot. In fact, you might even wish something similar would happen to you!” [J SNYDER]

“In this brand new atlas, National Geographic has created an engaging book with fact-filled essays and spectacular photographs that will catch the curiosity of young readers.

“Large maps pinpoint the physical features, capitals, and other towns and cities of each state. Key points reflect the latest information about land and water, animals, and people and places.

“Children can access a wealth of information including state flags, birds and flowers.” [J912.73 BEGINNER'S]
