Are you in 5th or 6th grade? We have something NEW for YOU!! You’ve heard about book discussion groups, perhaps a parent participates in one. Everyone reads the same book, then gets together to discuss it.
Well now, the Union City Library is starting a Tween Book Discussion Club just for you! If you are in grade five or six, you are invited and encouraged to join. Come in to the Library any time we are open, sign up and check out a book. Then come to the Library Saturday, October 16th 3 – 4 p.m. to discuss the book – what you liked, what you didn’t like, why you finished it…. why you DIDN’T finish it.
And to make the afternoon even more fun, there will be treats, yummy things to snack on while you chat!
The first title to be discussed is The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker by Cynthia DeFelice.
In 1849 Connecticut, 12-year-old Lucas Whitaker has lost his entire family to tuberculosis, called at the time ‘consumption’ because it seemed like the sufferers were being consumed by something as they grew weaker. Medical practices of the day were helpless to fight the disease, and fear and superstition lead the survivors to try desperate measures.
When Lucas finds a job and new life with the town Doctor, he is torn between scientific and magical thinking. Which path will he take? Join the club, read the book, and find out!
