Art IS Education!



In honor of Art IS Education month in March, Alameda County Library is presenting a series of over 100 free arts events for youth and families. Art IS Education is an annual celebration of youth arts learning is Alameda County, during National Arts Education Month. The Art IS Education theme this year is “Every Child is Creative: Together We Create Our World.” Join the fun at the events, explore creative activities for the whole family, and be part of creating our world together! Here is what’s happening at the Union City Library:

Sunday March 2, 9, and 16 1:30 to 3 pm:  Journaling Workshop for Tweens

Children’s Author Sarah Hines Stephens will lead the children through the process of starting and keeping a journal. Keeping a journal is a great way to express thoughts and feelings as well as improving reading and writing skills.

Mondays, March 3, 10, 17 and 24, 10:30 – 11 am: Music and Movement

This fun and stimulating program provides a way for children aged 1 – 5 years to explore their creativity through singing, clapping, and dancing.

Tuesdays , March 4, and 18, 1 – 3 p.m.:  Write Your Story 

Join our senior library member Bruce Haase and write your memoir. Bruce is a life long reader, he now writes memoire-based, creative non-fiction. These are informal meetings to support each other and organize your thoughts for writing. Sharing is optional.

Tuesdays, March 4 and 11, 11 am – 12 pm: Preschool Storytime

Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26, 10:30 – 11:30 am: Toddler Time

In honor of Art IS Education, Preschool Storytime and Toddler programs will include stories about creativity and a simple craft. Storytimes are geared for children aged 3 – 5 years, and Toddler Times are for children aged birth to 3 years accompanied by an adult.

Saturday, March 8, 3 – 5pm: Looking & Making: A Photography Workshop for Teens

Photographer Paul Mueller will conduct a photography workshop for teens including a short walk outside making photos then returning indoors to look at and discuss the photos just made.

Wednesday March 12, 6 – 8 pm: Writing Workshop with Author Mary B Morrison

Mary B. Morrison, New York Times best-selling author is the up and coming artist with a multiple book-to-film deal.  Mary has seventeen published novels including her newest release, If I Can’t Have You. She started her work with self-publishing . She will be here to discuss Writing. Lift Every Voice and Write is Mary’s non-profit. The organization is established to help increase literacy and support students interested in pursuing writing as a career.

Friday, March 21, 3:30 to 5 pm: Teen Henna Program

Tweens and teens are invited to draw their dreams – directly on to their bodies – during a special Mehndi Henna program at 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, March 21. Participants will create their own designs that are important to them.

Sunday March 23, 3:30 to 4:30 pm: Nowruz Celebration – Ballet Afsaneh Performance

This is the celebration of the New Year (spring equinox) in Afghanistan, Iran and Tajikistan. Ballet Afsaneh presents the dance, music and poetry of the historic Silk Road networks of Eurasia. “Afsaneh” is a wonderful word, shared by the major language groups of the Silk Road, meaning “legend” or “mythic story”.
