Privacy Week Movie

Choose Privacy Week

May 1st – 8th is American Library Association’s Choose Privacy Week, an “event that promotes the importance of individual privacy rights and celebrates libraries and librarians’ unique role in protecting privacy.”  The theme for 2018 is Big Data is Watching You, a focus on the “growing threat of ‘big data’ analytics, especially in a time when technology, mobile computing, social media, and the growing adoption of ‘big data’ analytics pose new threats to everyone’s right to privacy.”  Please see the full press release from ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom for more information.

CitizenFour

To kick off Choose Privacy Week, Union City Library will be showing Citizenfour 5:45-7:45 on Tuesday May 1st:

Filmmaker Laura Poitras and  journalist Glenn Greenwald encounter Edward Snowden in Hong Kong, as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA). The film not only shows you the dangers of governmental surveillance—it makes you feel them.  After seeing the film, you will never think the same way about your phone, email, credit card, web browser, or profile, ever again.

Rating: R (for some language)

Light snacks will be provided. Tickets handed out at the Reference Desk May 1st.
